The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrested Gurjinder Singh alias Baba Beant in connection with the Shambhu railway track blast case and secured an eight-day custodial remand from a special NIA court to further investigate the alleged conspiracy behind the incident.
Gurjinder Singh was brought from Patiala Jail on a production warrant and produced before Special NIA (Duty) Judge Hardeep Singh in SAS Nagar (Mohali) on Monday. After hearing arguments from both the prosecution and defense, the court granted the NIA eight days of custodial interrogation. Investigators informed the court that the remand was necessary to examine the accused’s alleged links with foreign-based handlers and uncover additional aspects of the conspiracy.
The case relates to the April 27 IED explosion on the Special Freight Corridor railway track near the Shambhu Barrier. According to earlier investigations by Punjab Police and Counter Intelligence units, alleged operative Jagrup Singh alias Roopa, a resident of Panjwar village in Tarn Taran, was killed during the blast while reportedly attempting to plant the explosive device on the railway track.
Authorities have alleged that Gurjinder Singh and his associates were part of a larger terror module. Investigators claim the network maintained connections with handlers based in Pakistan and Malaysia, though these allegations remain under investigation and have not yet been tested in court. Earlier operations led to the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of weapons, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades, and other incriminating materials.
Investigators are also examining possible links between the accused module and other incidents, including the Sirhind railway track blast and the Moga grenade attack. Security experts note that attacks targeting railway infrastructure pose significant risks to public safety and national transportation networks.
During the remand period, the NIA is expected to focus on communication records, funding channels, foreign contacts, and the broader operational structure of the alleged network. Further findings are expected as the investigation progresses.
