Batala: A major breach in the Upper Bari Doab Canal at Sathiali triggered heavy flooding, sending water across the Sri Hargobindpur–Gurdaspur main road and into nearby agricultural fields. The sudden overflow has left local farmers worried about extensive crop losses.
Farmers Pragat Singh, Hardeep Singh, Gurnam Singh, Gurbant Singh, and Sukhjinder Singh said the canal runs alongside their farmland, where they recently planted paddy. They explained that the canal embankment gave way unexpectedly, allowing a strong flow of water to rush into their fields within a short period.
The fast-moving water has already submerged more than 20 acres of paddy crop, putting the entire cultivation at risk. Farmers fear that continued erosion and water flow could damage even larger areas if authorities fail to control the breach quickly.
The overflowing water also crossed the Sri Hargobindpur–Gurdaspur road, creating difficulties for commuters and increasing safety concerns in the area. Residents and farmers urged the irrigation department to take immediate action to plug the breach and prevent further destruction.
Local farmers warned that every passing hour increases the damage to their crops and livelihoods. They called for urgent repairs, proper drainage measures, and compensation for the losses caused by the canal breach.
Officials have yet to announce the extent of the damage, but villagers continue to monitor the situation as water levels remain high in the affected fields.
