Indri Olympic swimming pool

After nearly a decade of delays and unfulfilled promises, residents of Indri in Haryana’s Karnal district are finally set to get access to an Olympic-standard swimming facility, with authorities announcing that the long-awaited pool is expected to open in July 2026.

The swimming pool, located at Shaheed Udham Singh Government College in Matak Majri village, was first announced in 2015 with the objective of promoting aquatic sports and providing world-class training facilities to young athletes from the region. However, the project faced repeated setbacks, including administrative hurdles, changes in executing agencies and delays in obtaining essential infrastructure such as electricity and water connections. Despite being inaugurated in 2024, the facility remained closed to the public.

The Olympic-size pool, constructed at an estimated cost of ₹5.59 crore, features eight competition lanes, separate changing and bathing facilities, and infrastructure designed to host professional training sessions. Officials have now confirmed that the remaining formalities are in the final stages and that the facility is likely to become operational next month.

The opening of the pool is expected to provide a major boost to sports development in Indri and nearby areas, reducing the need for aspiring swimmers to travel to Karnal or other cities for training. Local residents and sports enthusiasts have welcomed the development, expressing hope that the facility will nurture future talent and encourage greater participation in swimming among youngsters.

For many in Indri, the launch of the pool marks the end of a 10-year wait and the beginning of a new chapter in the region’s sporting landscape.
