The Supreme Court has intensified its scrutiny of illegal constructions in Haryana, raising concerns over the effectiveness of enforcement by municipal authorities. During the latest hearing, the apex court questioned whether civic bodies had taken adequate steps to remove unauthorized structures and comply with earlier judicial directions aimed at curbing illegal development.
The court observed that despite previous orders, reports of unauthorized buildings and encroachments continue to emerge from several urban areas in the state. It sought details from civic authorities regarding the action taken against such violations and the mechanisms in place to prevent fresh illegal construction.
The proceedings come amid growing concerns over lax enforcement of building regulations, with municipal corporations facing criticism for failing to act promptly against violators. Urban planning experts believe the latest intervention could prompt Haryana’s municipal bodies to accelerate action against illegal structures while ensuring that every demolition or enforcement measure complies with legal procedures. The matter is expected to remain under judicial monitoring as the court reviews the state’s compliance with its directions.
