BJP-backed Karnal Zila Parishad Chairperson Pravesh Kumari was removed from office on Thursday after a no-confidence motion against her was passed with a clear majority during a meeting of the district council.
The voting took place at the Karnal Zila Parishad office under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Dr. Anand Sharma. Out of the 25 elected members, 19 councillors attended the meeting, and 17 voted in favour of the no-confidence motion, effectively withdrawing their support for the chairperson.
The voting process was conducted peacefully under the supervision of administrative officials. Following the announcement of the results, Pravesh Kumari ceased to hold the post of Zila Parishad chairperson. As per the rules, the district administration will now initiate the process to elect a new chairperson, with the election schedule expected to be announced soon.
The political developments had been unfolding over the past two months. On March 2, the BJP-supported vice-chairperson and several members openly revolted against Pravesh Kumari’s leadership. At the time, 16 councillors submitted a memorandum to the then Deputy Commissioner Uttam Singh, demanding that a no-confidence motion be brought against the chairperson and that new leadership be elected.
Thursday’s outcome marks a significant shift in the political landscape of the Karnal Zila Parishad, ending months of internal conflict and setting the stage for a new leadership in the district council. The election of the next chairperson will be conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Haryana Panchayati Raj Act.
