New Delhi: A video of educationist and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk confronting security personnel at Safdarjung Hospital has gone viral, sparking widespread attention and debate. The incident occurred during his prolonged hunger strike and has since drawn official clarification.
In the video, Wangchuk is seen arguing with authorities, alleging harassment and demanding clarity over his situation. He repeatedly asked officials to either allow him to leave or arrest him, saying, “If I die of stress, it will be your responsibility.”
Wangchuk Lies on Floor During Protest
As tensions escalated, Wangchuk lay down on the hospital floor in protest. Supporters recorded the incident, while he urged them to continue filming, highlighting what he described as unfair treatment.
His wife, Geetanjali Angmo, was also present and voiced her anger during the confrontation. Wangchuk further insisted that a court order allowing his transfer was already public knowledge, stating, “It is digitally everywhere. The world knows except you.”
Dispute Over Transfer to Medanta
The confrontation reportedly took place when Wangchuk attempted to move to Medanta Hospital after developments in the Delhi High Court regarding his case.
However, officials said he was stopped because the hospital had not yet received the court’s written order at that time. According to authorities, actions could only be taken after official documentation was received, despite media reports suggesting otherwise.
Hospital authorities later confirmed that Wangchuk was transferred to Medanta Hospital the same evening after the written order arrived.
Claims of Harassment and Restrictions
In a longer video shared online, Wangchuk alleged that he was treated “like a prisoner” during his stay at Safdarjung Hospital. He claimed restrictions on movement, limited access to visitors, and denial of personal devices.
He also questioned why he was being stopped even after the court’s decision was widely reported, expressing frustration over what he described as unnecessary delays and pressure.
Hunger Strike and Decision to End Protest
Wangchuk had been on a hunger strike for 26 days before deciding to call it off. He said the decision came only after receiving written assurances that no legal action would be taken against peaceful protesters.
Responding to criticism, he defended his actions, saying his primary concern was the safety of protesters rather than political demands.
Authorities Issue Clarification
Officials maintained that the delay in allowing Wangchuk to leave was procedural, as they were waiting for formal court orders. They emphasized that once the written directive was received, the transfer was carried out promptly.

The viral video has triggered conversations around the treatment of activists, administrative processes, and the balance between legal protocol and individual rights. While authorities have clarified their stance, the incident continues to draw reactions across social media and political circles.
