The Haryana government has taken a major step to address the mounting pollution worries by setting up an online monitoring system that will operate on a 24×7 basis to continuously monitor the emissions from industries in major districts like Panipat, Sonipat and Karnal. The system is to be implemented starting today, which should lead to a tighter regulation of the environment throughout the state.
The new system is based on sophisticated digital technologies that enable the real-time monitoring of pollution emissions coming from industrial units, officials said. This system is more efficient than the previous, as it will be able to alert the authorities to any violation, in real time, without any delay.
It is being taken up under the supervision of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board, ensuring that the industries abide by the emission norms. Data will be monitored in real time, which officials hope will lead to increased transparency, and make it more difficult for industries to skirt environmental regulations.
In recent years, districts such as Panipat and Sonipat, which have a high density of industries, have been under increasing pressure because of the pollution they are subjected to. The addition of a 24-hour surveillance system has given the authorities hope for better and more regular regulation of harmful emissions.
The automatic alerts feature is one of the important aspects of the system. If pollution levels go up from the limit, the system will alert officials at once and they can take prompt action. This rapid reaction is likely to help avoid the situation going from bad to worse.
The decision has been welcomed by environmental experts, who have called it “a timely move, a much-needed one”. They feel that continuous monitoring needs to be carried out particularly in fast growing industrial areas that can quickly develop pollution if not monitored.
This project is one of several measures being taken by the State government to balance industrial development with environmental protection. Using technology solutions, Haryana wants to make sure the development does not impact the health of the public.
This move may be significant for Haryana and other states too as pollution continues to be a big problem in North India. Once it is in effect, it can result in improved air quality and better health for the community.
