The Middle East escalated to a new level of tensions on Monday when Israel and Iran launched further rounds of missile attacks and air strikes in the region, spooking world powers into the prospect of a wider war. The new fighting is the most serious direct conflict between the two nations since a fragile peace was agreed to earlier this year.
Israel military officials claim Iran fired several ballistic missiles at the Israeli nation and air-raid sirens went off in various areas, urging people to take shelter. The attacks intensified Israel’s security concerns and many of the missiles were caught by Israel’s defense system.
Israel in turn made air attacks on military installations in central and western Iran. Strikes on military-related facilities in and around Tehran, Isfahan, Karaj, Tabriz and Kermanshah were reported, while Iranian media confirmed explosions there. Israeli officials said the raid targeted facilities for launching missiles and military strategic hardware.
The drive to mount attacks on each other has stepped up concerns that the fighting may escalate beyond the two countries and involve other regional powers. Iran has threatened to respond to additional Israeli military strikes with a “broader” response, and there are fears over the safety of international shipping lanes and military bases in the Middle East.
The world leaders have appealed for calm and the resumption of diplomatic talks. The U.S. has not seen or participated in the latest Israeli military operations but is closely monitoring the situation. International observers are concerned that continued fighting may have adverse consequences for the region, energy supplies and the global economy.
The renewed violence follows weeks of fragile calm and continued diplomatic efforts to defuse the situation. But the most recent missile firings have brought doubt to those endeavors and brought to mind fears of a prolonged conflict.
Governments around the world are closely monitoring the developments and citizens around the region are preparing for one of the biggest security threats in the Middle East in recent years.
