India has urged the United Nations to review its sanctions regime on Afghanistan. Speaking at a UN meeting, India said the political situation in Afghanistan has changed significantly since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
India Calls for a Practical Approach
India’s representative said the current sanctions framework was created under different circumstances. According to India, the international community should now consider the realities on the ground while protecting regional security.
The envoy stressed that policies must support the Afghan people. At the same time, countries must remain alert to security threats and terrorism.
Focus on Security and Stability
India repeated its long-standing position that Afghan territory must not be used for terrorism. The country called for stronger efforts to prevent extremist groups from using Afghanistan as a base for attacks.
The Indian delegation also highlighted the importance of regional peace and stability. It said a balanced approach would help both Afghanistan and its neighbours.
Debate Over Engagement With the Taliban
The Taliban has controlled Afghanistan since August 2021. However, most countries have not formally recognised its government.
Many nations continue to debate how they should engage with the Taliban administration. Some countries have increased diplomatic contacts, while others remain cautious.
The UN sanctions regime, including travel restrictions and asset freezes on certain individuals, remains a key part of the international response to Afghanistan.
Humanitarian Concerns Remain
India also stressed the need for uninterrupted humanitarian assistance. Millions of Afghans continue to face economic difficulties, food shortages, and limited access to essential services.
New Delhi has provided food aid, medicines, and development support to Afghanistan in recent years. India said the welfare of ordinary Afghans should remain a priority for the global community.
Growing International Discussion
India’s remarks reflect a wider international debate on Afghanistan. Many countries are looking for ways to balance security concerns with the need for engagement and humanitarian support.
The future of UN sanctions on Afghanistan is likely to remain an important topic at upcoming international discussions.
