The Chandigarh Administration has announced a 20 per cent reservation for Agniveers in recruitment to the Chandigarh Fire Department, providing a significant employment opportunity for personnel completing service under the Agnipath scheme. The decision is aimed at utilizing the skills, discipline, and training acquired by Agniveers during their tenure in the armed forces.
Officials said the reservation will apply to eligible candidates seeking positions in the fire services department, subject to prescribed qualifications and recruitment norms. The move aligns with broader efforts across various government sectors to facilitate career opportunities for Agniveers after their military service.
Authorities noted that Agniveers possess valuable experience in areas such as emergency response, physical fitness, disaster management, and teamwork, making them well-suited for roles in firefighting and rescue operations. The reservation is expected to strengthen the department by bringing in personnel with specialized training and operational experience.
The announcement has been welcomed by many serving and former Agniveers, who view it as a positive step toward ensuring post-service career prospects. Recruitment experts also believe the measure could encourage more young people to consider joining the Agnipath scheme by providing a clearer pathway to future employment.
Officials emphasized that the recruitment process will continue to follow established procedures, including physical tests, written examinations, and other eligibility requirements. Detailed guidelines regarding implementation of the quota are expected to be issued by the administration.
The decision reflects Chandigarh’s efforts to support former defence personnel while enhancing the capabilities of its emergency services. As recruitment opportunities open in the future, the reservation is likely to benefit Agniveers seeking to transition into civilian public service roles, particularly in departments that require discipline, preparedness, and quick response capabilities.
