Excessive Emotion

Adverse effects of Controlling feelings and Over-introversion.

People are social and emotional creatures. Talking through thought, feeling or experience assists people develop relationship, understand oneself and experience emotional wellness. But others have a tendency to suppress their feelings or withdraw from people for extended time. Intrusiveness is a normal way of being, but when it is over developed and the emotions are suppressed it may produce problems in various areas of life. May impair mental health, communication, relationship, self-confidence and personal development. It is essential to know what it means to be an introvert and how it benefits a person’s life versus how it can be dangerous.

Understanding Introversion

Introversion is a personality type that is more prone to calm surroundings, thinking and less social interaction. They can become rejuvenated by being left alone and often prefer to talk to one or two people rather than a group of people. They tend to be reflective, attentive and considerate.

It is essential to realize that being introverted isn’t a defect or a mental illness. Some of the world’s most successful leaders, writers, scientists and artists have been introverts. Introversion is just another way of relating with the world.

Introversion vs. Shyness

Introversion and shyness are not synonymous.

Introversion is the source of energy for a person. Introverts tend to like being alone and might prefer less stimulating social situations.

Shyness is characterized by fear, anxiety or discomfort in social situations, commonly associated with fear of judgment or criticism.

For instance, if one is introverted, he or she might prefer to spend a weekend reading a book because of their love for quiet time. A shy person might wish to go to a social function and lack the urge to engage with any other people. So, introversion is a personality disposition and shyness is more closely related to social anxiety.

The problem of suppressing feelings is a frequent occurrence among children.

Emotions are a natural part of human life. Emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, disappointment and excitement enable people to learn about their experiences and react to situations appropriately. But some people don’t express their emotions for many reasons such as fear, embarrassment, culture, and personal habits.

In some cases, it’s important to suppress emotions for a brief time. But it is possible to strain the emotions over months or years by hiding them consistently and negatively impact overall well-being.

Affect on mental health

Suppression of emotions has the biggest impact on mental health. When individuals repeatedly ignore or hide their emotions, emotional tension can build up over time.

This may lead to:

Increased stress levels

Anxiety and worry

Feelings of loneliness

Emotional exhaustion

Lack of the ability to handle emotions well

A student may become more and more stressed and emotionally exhausted when overwhelmed by school demands without talking to anyone about them. When engaging in discussions about feelings, people tend to deal with problems better.

Effects on Relationships

Communication, trust and emotional openness are key to healthy relationships. If one’s emotions are always hidden from others, others may not grasp one’s thoughts, needs or concerns.

A friend who feels hurt by a misunderstanding, but doesn’t say anything about it, for instance, may have a problem that goes unsolved. This distance may occur over time, leading to the deterioration of relationships.

If people don’t express their emotions well, this can also hinder them from building deeper relationships, as healthy relationships involve openness and vulnerability.

Communication Challenges

Those who don’t communicate well may find it difficult to express themselves. They may be reluctant to share opinions, seek assistance or talk about personal matters. Therefore, miscommunication can happen in personal, educational, and work environments.

Clear communication helps people to resolve issues, communicate their needs and improve their relationships. Failure to express feelings can lead to significant problems being ignored.

Reduced Self-Confidence

When emotions are continually suppressed, it can impact self-confidence. People might find that they’re not able to share their thoughts or feelings or that they don’t have any.People may start to question the worth of their thoughts or feelings, or that they can’t express them.

In the case of an employee, who doesn’t talk during meetings, he may not be able to contribute or grow professionally. But, limiting self-expression can stunt self-expression over time, which hampers personal growth and confidence.

Impact on Personal Growth

Growth in one’s person is frequently experienced when one moves beyond his/her comfort zone, forms new relationships, and engages in new experiences. For some people, excessive introversion and social withdrawal may lead to the failure to make use of valuable opportunities.

Students may not receive opportunities to acquire communication, leadership, and teamwork skills if they refuse participation in activities such as group projects, networking events, and collaborative projects. Solitude can bring out the best in someone, leading to reflection and creativity, however complete isolation can ‘stifle’ personal and professional growth.

My Opinion

In my view, introversion is a natural personality type and can be a good thing, but if it progresses to the extreme and there is too much isolation and little or no expression of emotions, this can result in loneliness, stress, misunderstandings and missed opportunities. Introverts have many good traits, including the ability to think deeply, be creative, and focus well. But it’s important to have emotionally healthy communication and social relationships, to maintain the emotional balance. Communication of feelings and the establishment of relationships can enhance happiness and success in life.

Healthy Ways to Express Feelings & Build Connections

Practice Open Communication

Talk to trusted family, friends, mentors to relieve emotional stress and build relationships.

Keep a Journal

Expressing emotions and experiences in writing can assist in understanding emotions and coping with challenges.

Developing small but significant relationships

Introverts need not have wide social circles. A few supportive and meaningful friendships can provide valuable emotional support.

Join in Activities of Interest

Participating in clubs, classes, volunteer programs or hobby groups can provide opportunities to meet others who share similar interests in a non-threatening environment.

Develop Emotional Awareness

Understanding and acknowledging feelings without judgment enables people to feel more confident and healthy about expressing themselves.

Conclusion

Being introverted is a natural and beneficial personality type and can have many advantages, such as thoughtfulness, creativity, and independence. But, when not balanced with extraversion and when extinguished for an extended period of time, introversion may have adverse effects on mental health, relationships, communication, self-confidence, and personal development. After spending time alone, it’s important to express emotions and have a social life. Embracing the strengths of being an introvert through healthy communication, nurturing relationships, and expressing emotions in a constructive way, allows them to achieve well-rounded personal growth and maintain emotional health.
