Indonesia Earthquake Triggers Panic, No Major Tsunami Threat Reported

A strong earthquake struck Indonesia on Tuesday, sending residents rushing out of homes and buildings as tremors were felt across parts of Sulawesi Island. According to Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), the quake measured 6.7 in magnitude and occurred near the city of Palu at a shallow depth of around 10 kilometers. Authorities confirmed that there was no tsunami threat following the seismic event.

The earthquake’s epicenter was located approximately 42 kilometers southeast of Palu, a city that still carries memories of the devastating 2018 earthquake and tsunami that claimed thousands of lives. The latest tremor caused widespread alarm, prompting many residents to evacuate homes, offices, and public buildings as a precaution.

Local authorities reported several injuries, particularly in nearby Sigi Regency, where at least eight people were hurt, including two who sustained serious injuries. Hospitals temporarily evacuated patients, while emergency teams assessed damage across affected areas. Several buildings suffered cracks and structural damage, with some partially collapsing due to the strong shaking.

The earthquake was followed by a series of aftershocks, the strongest reaching a magnitude of 5.2. Disaster management officials urged residents to remain alert and avoid damaged structures until safety inspections are completed. Authorities are continuing to monitor seismic activity and provide assistance to affected communities.

Indonesia lies along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” one of the world’s most active seismic zones. As a result, the country frequently experiences earthquakes and volcanic activity. While no tsunami warning was issued for this latest quake, the incident serves as another reminder of the region’s vulnerability to natural disasters. Emergency agencies remain on standby as damage assessments continue and residents recover from the shock of the event.
