How Gen Z is influencing Fashion Trends

How Gen Z is Influencing Fashion Trends

Introduction

Look around. Today’s fashion landscape is far cry from what it was ten years ago. Runways are less influential, Malls are quieter, and some of the most powerful style icons are a teenagers creating content from their Bedrooms.

The Gen Z generation (1997-2012) is changing the rules of fashion. Not by embracing trends, but by creating trends. And they are doing it on their own terms.

Thrifting is the new shopping

Gen Z cool by second-hand. Whereas an economy choice once became a lifestyle choice.

Why they love it:
– One of a kind — not the same anywhere else
– It is cheap — it’s great deals at a cheap price
– It is eco-friendly — less waste, less fast fashion

There are now platforms where thrifting is possible like Depop, Vinted or Thred Up. Vintage shopping isn’t simply a habit, it is a statement.

Gender Rules? They Don’t Care

Men in skirts. Ladies in huge suits. Outfits that are not specifically sexed. Undesexed outfits. Gen Z normalised it all.

Today clothes aren’t “for men” or “for women” for this generation. These are nothing more than clothes! And you wear what makes you feel you – period.

Big brands noticed. Gender-neutral collections and unisex sizing are also now commonplace, as Gen Z demanded it without needing to come first.

Micro-Trends move in lightning speed.

TikTok changed everything. One video can turn into millions of wardrobes in less than 48 hours.

Some hairstyles Gen Z popularized:
– Y2K — low-rise jeans, butterfly clips, 2000’s retro
For Cottagecore, it’s the flowy dresses, florals and soft romantic vibes.
Vintage books, dark academia blazers, turtlenecks, energy
This is a clean design. This is a minimalistic, sleek, easy design.

The thing is — Gen Z moves on as quickly. When brands are able to produce a trend in bulk, Gen Z has already gone onto to another trend.

Mentor the process. Guide the process.

At the heart of all of these micro trends lies one single principle — ‘Be yourself.

The Gen Z style icons which people appreciate are not the ones who are following the trends. It’s they who have a look so consistent and so personal that you can tell that you are looking at the same person. This is called having an “aesthetic” (notice the capital A) and curating one is a matter of serious business to Gen Z.

Fashion is identity. It isn’t identity that you steal from a magazine!

Comfort Is Non-Negotiable

These kids wore joggers and hoodies. For two years they got stuck in loungewear due to a global pandemic. These days they won’t go back.

The trend of Gen Z comfort fashion is:
Hoodies, Blazers, t-shirts were all oversized.
Formal shoes paired with casual outfits — including for weddings.
As the name implies, soft fabrics, loose-fitting clothing and items that can be breathed in.
Getting rid of heels in favor of chunky boots or flats

You don’t need to be in pain in order to be stylish. Gen Z has proven that it’s not about looking good and feeling comfortable.

Social Media is their runway

For older generations, trends were generated from fashion shows, magazines and celebrity red carpet. This pipeline has been essentially inoperable for years.

Gen Z gets their fashion inspiration from:
– TikTok outfit videos
– Instagram reels and aesthetic grids
– Pinterest mood boards
– Garage sales in the photos section

Now influence fashion from every corner of the world, with a phone and a good eye. No designer label or magazine cover required. No special effects are required but point of view, and light, is all that’s needed.

They Hold Brands Accountable

Gen Z isn’t simply shopping for fashion; they’re researching it.

They ask: “How much money are we going to lose?
Is this brand sustainable or is it “playing sustainable”?
-Do the workers receive a fair wage?
– Does this brand value and encourage diversity and inclusion?
– Have they posed any problems in the past?

They read reviews carefully. Furthermore, they listen to exposes and investigate Brands before making purchase. In addition, they actively raise awareness about greenwashing and other unethical practices. If it doesn’t fit their values they don’t hesitate to boycott a brand in public.

Ethics for fashion companies are no longer a choice. That’s Gen Z who took care of it.

Fashion for the Gen Z in India

In India, Gen Z are doing something really interesting – Globalizing the local.

You will see:
– Kurtas with sneakers and street fashion.
– Sarees that are draped over crop tops or denim jackets
– Traditional jewelry with casual outfits – Traditional jewellery with casual wearings – Traditional jewellery with casual clothes
I have been collecting a variety of items from local Sunday markets and Instagram shops.

There’s no need for Indian Gen Z to pick between culture and trends. They’re mixing both of them and it’s a spectacular look!

Conclusion

Gen Z didn’t just change clothing. They revolutionized the meaning of wearing it.

Fashion today is not only about what looks good on a mannequin; it’s about identity, values, comfort and self-expression! This generation was more personal, more political, more sustainable and more fun.

The industry used to dictate fashion. The Gen Z saw that and then picked up their repurposed jacket and stated — we’ll deal with that from here.

And honestly? Fashion is now more fascinating than ever.
