Punjab Weather: Yellow Alert Issued for Rain and Thunderstorms from June 19
IMD predicts rainfall and temperature drop as pre-monsoon activity intensifies in Punjab.

The India Meteorological Department (India Meteorological Department) has issued a yellow alert for several parts of Punjab, warning of rain and thunderstorms beginning June 19. The alert signals a noticeable shift in weather conditions across the state, with pre-monsoon activity expected to bring relief from the ongoing heatwave.

According to Surinder Pal, Director of IMD Chandigarh (Surinder Pal), temperatures in Punjab are likely to drop by up to four degrees Celsius due to this developing weather system. He clarified that the current activity is part of the pre-monsoon phase and not an official onset of the monsoon.

“As of now, it is pre-monsoon rains and nothing can be said definitively about the arrival of monsoon,” he stated, urging the public to treat the forecast as an early seasonal change rather than a full monsoon transition.

The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds in several districts of the state. While the exact intensity may vary region-wise, most parts of central and northern Punjab are expected to experience noticeable weather changes. The rainfall is likely to bring temporary relief from rising daytime temperatures that have been affecting residents over the past several days.

A yellow alert issued by the IMD indicates that people should “be aware” of changing weather conditions. It is a cautionary warning advising citizens to stay updated with official forecasts and take necessary precautions, especially during thunderstorms and lightning activity.

Authorities have advised residents to avoid open fields, trees, and water bodies during lightning, and to remain indoors whenever possible during intense weather activity. Farmers and outdoor workers have been urged to plan their activities carefully in view of sudden weather changes and gusty winds that may affect standing crops and field operations.

Pre-monsoon showers play an important role in Punjab’s climate cycle. They help lower temperatures, increase humidity, and prepare atmospheric conditions for the arrival of the southwest monsoon. These rains also provide temporary relief to agriculture, though they can sometimes be accompanied by sudden storms and wind activity.

The IMD has further clarified that it is still too early to confirm the official arrival of the monsoon in Punjab. Weather conditions will continue to be closely monitored over the coming days, and updated forecasts will be issued based on evolving atmospheric patterns.

For now, residents are advised to remain cautious and follow official weather updates as the state transitions into a more active pre-monsoon phase.
