Chandigarh is currently grappling with a severe and prolonged water supply crisis that has left thousands of residents struggling with daily needs. Over the past 30 days, many parts of the city have been experiencing consistently low water pressure, making it difficult for households to receive adequate water supply. The problem has become especially serious in multi-storey residential buildings, where water is failing to reach the second and third floors, leaving families without reliable access even for basic usage.
Residents report that the situation has disrupted normal life, forcing them to adjust their routines significantly. Morning and evening water supply timings, which earlier provided some relief, are now insufficient due to weak pressure. Many households are unable to fill overhead tanks properly, resulting in shortages throughout the day. The issue has also affected essential activities such as cooking, cleaning, bathing, and washing, creating widespread inconvenience.
As the crisis continues, a growing number of residents are now dependent on private water tankers to meet their daily requirements. However, this solution has added financial pressure on families, especially those in middle and lower-income groups. In some areas, tanker demand has increased sharply, leading to delays and irregular supply. Residents have also expressed concern about the quality and reliability of tanker water compared to municipal supply.
Local welfare associations have raised repeated complaints with the authorities, urging immediate action to restore normal water pressure. Despite these appeals, the issue persists, raising questions about maintenance of the distribution system and possible technical faults in pipelines or pumping stations. Experts suggest that aging infrastructure, increased population load, or irregular maintenance could be contributing factors behind the declining efficiency of the water network.
Citizens are now demanding a long-term solution rather than temporary fixes, emphasizing the need for system upgrades and better monitoring. They have called on the administration to conduct a detailed inspection of the entire supply chain and ensure that water reaches all floors consistently. Until then, residents continue to face uncertainty and daily hardship due to the ongoing disruption in one of the city’s most essential services.
