The Punjab Government has launched the “Little Steps, Big Development” campaign to improve the health and nutrition of children aged 0 to 3 years. The programme also focuses on early learning and regular health check-ups. It was launched during the Punjab Child Development Conclave 2026. Officials said the initiative will give young children better care during their most important years of development.
During the launch, Punjab’s Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur stressed the importance of the first 1,000 days of a child’s life. This period starts during pregnancy and continues until the child turns two. According to the minister, these years shape brain development, emotional health, physical growth, and learning ability. Therefore, investing in children at this stage is essential for building a healthier future generation.
As part of the campaign, Anganwadi workers will visit homes every month. They will meet families with children between 0 and 3 years of age. During each visit, workers will explain age-appropriate activities and promote play-based learning. They will also monitor developmental milestones and advise parents on nutrition and responsive caregiving.
The campaign also introduces a Child Development Report Card. Parents can use this report card to monitor their child’s physical, language, cognitive, and social development. In addition, it will help identify developmental delays at an early stage. As a result, children can receive timely support whenever needed.
To encourage parental participation, the government will distribute illustrated guidebooks. These books contain simple activities that parents can practise with their children at home. Officials believe regular interaction between parents and children improves confidence, communication skills, and learning outcomes. Moreover, play-based learning helps children develop social and emotional skills.
Dr. Baljit Kaur also highlighted the success of Mission Aarambh, Punjab’s WhatsApp-based home learning programme. So far, the initiative has reached nearly 1.6 lakh parents with support from more than 26,000 Anganwadi workers across all 23 districts. During the 2025-26 financial year, over 15.5 lakh parents, including nearly 4.84 lakh fathers, took part in Early Childhood Care and Education Day activities. These figures show growing awareness about child development across the state.
Overall, the campaign supports Punjab’s efforts to improve maternal and child health. It also aims to reduce malnutrition and prepare children for school. Through better nutrition, early stimulation, and quality preschool education, the government hopes every child will receive a strong start in life. Ultimately, the initiative aims to build a healthier, more confident, and better-educated generation.
