Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convenor Arvind Kejriwal has alleged that previous governments led by the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Congress contributed to the worsening of Punjab’s drug problem. The remarks were made during a public event where Kejriwal highlighted the state government’s ongoing efforts to address drug abuse and trafficking.
Speaking to supporters, Kejriwal claimed that years of governance by rival political parties failed to effectively tackle the issue, allowing drug addiction and illegal narcotics networks to expand in parts of Punjab. He argued that the problem had developed over a long period and required sustained action to reverse its impact. These statements represent political allegations made by the AAP leader and have been a subject of debate among Punjab’s political parties.
Leaders from opposition parties have previously rejected similar accusations, arguing that drug abuse is a complex social and law enforcement challenge that cannot be attributed to any single government or political group. They have also pointed to measures undertaken during their respective tenures to combat trafficking and support rehabilitation efforts.
Punjab has faced concerns related to drug abuse for several years, with policymakers, law enforcement agencies, healthcare professionals, and community organizations all emphasizing the need for coordinated action. Experts note that addressing addiction requires a combination of enforcement against drug networks, awareness campaigns, rehabilitation services, and long-term social support programs.
The Punjab government has introduced various initiatives aimed at reducing drug-related crimes and strengthening treatment facilities for individuals struggling with addiction. Authorities have also increased efforts to disrupt trafficking networks and improve cooperation among enforcement agencies.
Political observers say Kejriwal’s remarks are likely to intensify debate over accountability and policy effectiveness in addressing one of Punjab’s most persistent social challenges. The issue remains a significant concern for residents across the state and continues to feature prominently in public discourse.
As discussions continue, experts stress that evidence-based policies, effective rehabilitation programs, and sustained enforcement measures will be essential to addressing drug abuse and supporting affected communities across Punjab.
