Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered in Évian-les-Bains, France, on June 15 for a three-day summit dominated by international security concerns, including the recently announced preliminary peace agreement between the United States and Iran. The accord, reached after months of escalating tensions and military confrontation, has quickly become a central topic alongside discussions on the war in Ukraine, global economic challenges, energy security, critical mineral supply chains, and relations with China.
U.S. President Donald Trump described the agreement as a major diplomatic breakthrough, stating that it would bring a “permanent” end to military action between Washington and Tehran. He also highlighted plans to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil transit routes, and confirmed that negotiations would continue on sanctions relief and Iran’s nuclear program.
French President Emmanuel Macron, hosting the summit, emphasized the importance of maintaining international cooperation during a period of geopolitical uncertainty. The meeting also includes Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is expected to seek continued military and financial support from Western allies as Ukraine’s conflict with Russia continues. Leaders from invited nations, including India, Brazil, South Korea, and Kenya, are also participating in discussions on global development and economic resilience.
The U.S.-Iran agreement has been welcomed cautiously by several world leaders, who view it as a positive step toward reducing tensions in the Middle East. Analysts say the deal could improve regional stability and lower risks to global energy supplies by ensuring safer passage through the Strait of Hormuz. Financial markets have responded positively, with expectations that reduced geopolitical uncertainty could help stabilize oil prices and support international trade.
Despite the optimism, officials acknowledge that significant challenges remain. Future negotiations on Iran’s nuclear activities, verification mechanisms, and long-term security arrangements are expected to test the durability of the agreement. As the summit continues, G7 leaders are expected to explore ways to support the peace process while maintaining unity on Ukraine and other pressing global issues.
