Faster Route for Amritsar–Katra Vande Bharat
Revised rail alignment is expected to improve connectivity, reduce travel time, and boost tourism and pilgrimage traffic.

The Amritsar–Katra Vande Bharat Express is set to benefit from a faster route alignment via Batala and Gurdaspur, a move expected to significantly enhance rail connectivity between Punjab and the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir while reducing travel time for passengers.

According to railway officials, the revised alignment incorporates infrastructure upgrades and operational improvements along the Batala–Gurdaspur corridor. The route optimization is expected to allow higher train speeds and more efficient movement, improving overall journey times between Amritsar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra. Officials said the changes are part of broader efforts to modernize railway infrastructure and improve passenger services across northern India.

The inclusion of Batala and Gurdaspur is seen as a major boost for the region. Local residents, business groups, and tourism stakeholders believe the improved connectivity will facilitate easier travel for pilgrims, tourists, and daily commuters while supporting local economic activity. District officials welcomed the development, noting that better rail access could encourage investment and strengthen regional trade links.

Railway authorities highlighted the importance of the Amritsar–Katra Vande Bharat service in connecting two of North India’s most prominent religious destinations—the Shri Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar and the Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine in Katra. Improved travel options are expected to increase pilgrimage traffic and enhance tourism-related opportunities for businesses in both regions.

The project builds on ongoing railway modernization initiatives that include track upgrades, station redevelopment, electrification, advanced signaling systems, and safety enhancements. Railway experts noted that such improvements are essential for maximizing the potential of semi-high-speed trains such as Vande Bharat.

Passengers and tourism industry representatives have welcomed the proposed faster route, expressing optimism about reduced travel times and improved comfort. While officials have indicated that technical assessments and infrastructure works are progressing, further operational clearances and final implementation steps remain before the route changes become fully functional.

Authorities said additional details regarding timelines and service enhancements will be announced as the project advances.
