PM Modi’s ‘Melody’ Gift to Giorgia Meloni Turns Viral, Internet Revives ‘Melodi’ Craze
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Italy visit took an unexpectedly viral turn after a light-hearted moment with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni reignited the internet-famous “Melodi” trend. During his meeting with Meloni in Rome, PM Modi gifted her a packet of India’s popular Melody toffees — a playful gesture that quickly exploded across social media platforms.
The now-viral video was shared by Giorgia Meloni herself on social media, where she thanked PM Modi for the gift. In the clip, Meloni is seen smiling while describing the Indian candy as a “very, very good toffee,” after which PM Modi jokingly responds with a single word: “Melody.” The exchange immediately grabbed online attention because of the long-running internet nickname “Melodi” — a fusion of “Modi” and “Meloni.”
How the ‘Melodi’ Trend Began
The “Melodi” trend first gained popularity during previous global summits where PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni were seen sharing warm and informal interactions. Their selfies, candid videos and friendly public exchanges at events like the G20, COP28 and G7 summits became meme material across social media.
The trend became so popular that Giorgia Meloni herself acknowledged it publicly in 2025 by posting a selfie video with PM Modi captioned:
“Hello from the Melodi team.”
Since then, every interaction between the two leaders has drawn heavy online attention, with memes, edits and fan pages dedicated to the duo regularly appearing across Instagram, X and YouTube.
More Than Just a Meme Moment
While the Melody-toffee moment dominated social media, PM Modi’s Italy visit was also diplomatically significant. The Indian Prime Minister held discussions with Italian leadership focusing on:
- trade expansion,
- defence cooperation,
- artificial intelligence,
- clean energy,
- semiconductors,
- maritime security,
- and investment partnerships.
PM Modi and Giorgia Meloni were also seen visiting Rome’s iconic Colosseum together and attending multiple diplomatic engagements during the trip. Their public chemistry once again became one of the most discussed moments of the visit online.
Internet Reactions and Meme Explosion
Within hours of the video being uploaded, the clip spread rapidly across social media platforms. According to reports, some versions of the reel crossed tens of millions of views within a few hours.
Social media users flooded platforms with memes and jokes connecting:
- Melody candy,
- the “Melodi” nickname,
- and India-Italy diplomacy.
Many users called it one of PM Modi’s most “internet-aware” diplomatic gestures so far. Others joked that the Prime Minister had officially “embraced the meme culture.”
Unexpected Impact on the Stock Market
The viral moment even created unusual movement in the Indian stock market. Shortly after the video went viral, shares of Parle Industries jumped nearly 5% as investors mistakenly assumed the company was linked to Melody toffee.
However, the actual Melody candy is manufactured by privately held FMCG giant Parle Products — the company behind brands such as Parle-G, Monaco, Mango Bite and Hide & Seek. Since Parle Products is not listed on the stock exchange, many retail traders reportedly ended up purchasing shares of unrelated company Parle Industries because of the similar name.
According to reports, Parle Industries’ stock price moved from around ₹4.95 to ₹5.25 within a short period after the clip gained traction online.
Political Reactions
The viral moment also triggered political reactions in India. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticised PM Modi over the “Melodi” videos and accused the government of focusing on image-building while economic challenges continued to affect ordinary citizens.
Despite the criticism, the clip continued dominating online conversations throughout the day, with hashtags related to “Melodi,” “Melody toffee,” and “Modi-Meloni” trending across platforms.
The episode once again demonstrated how modern diplomacy, social media culture and political branding are increasingly blending together in the digital age — where even a small packet of toffee can become a global viral moment.
