Himachal Launches “Mission 32%” Forest Drive to Boost Green Cover by 2030

State Sets Ambitious Green Target

The Himachal Pradesh government has launched a major environmental campaign called “Mission 32%.” The initiative aims to increase the state’s forest and green cover from 29.5 percent to 32 percent by 2030. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu is leading the programme, while the Forest Department will carry out plantation and eco-restoration work across the state.

Focus on Afforestation and Climate Action

Through Mission 32%, the government wants to strengthen ecological balance and promote Himachal Pradesh as a “Green Himalayan State.” The programme will focus on biodiversity conservation, soil protection, and water conservation. In addition, officials hope the initiative will help reduce the impact of climate change in the hill state. The Forest Department will conduct plantation drives under CAMPA projects, government forestry schemes, and externally funded programmes.

Plantation Drive Across 8,000 Hectares

For the financial year 2026–27, the state has set a plantation target of nearly 8,000 hectares. The department plans to plant indigenous and fruit-bearing trees in different regions. These plantations will improve ecological balance and also support rural livelihoods. Moreover, the government expects the project to create employment opportunities through agro-forestry and eco-restoration activities.

Community Participation to Play Key Role

The government has also focused on public participation under the mission. Plantation work will take place across around 4,000 hectares through nearly 1,100 community groups under the Rajiv Gandhi Van Samvardhan Yojana. Out of these groups, 60 percent will include women, while 20 percent will consist of youth groups. The remaining groups will include self-help organisations. As a result, the initiative is expected to strengthen community involvement in environmental protection.

Government Promotes Sustainable Development

Mission 32% forms part of Himachal Pradesh’s wider green growth strategy. The government is also promoting renewable energy, natural farming, plastic waste management, and sustainable mountain development. Officials believe the initiative will help Himachal Pradesh emerge as a leading model for ecological sustainability and climate-friendly development in India.
