Internet usage among women in India has nearly doubled over the past few years, according to the latest findings from the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6). The survey reported that 64% of women now use the internet, a significant increase from 33% recorded during the previous survey conducted between 2019 and 2021.
The sharp rise highlights India’s growing digital transformation and increasing access to smartphones, affordable internet services, and digital literacy programs. Experts say the trend reflects greater participation of women in education, employment, online banking, e-commerce, and access to government services.
The survey also showed that internet usage among men remains higher than among women. However, the gender gap has narrowed considerably in recent years as more women gain access to digital tools and online resources.
Government initiatives aimed at expanding digital connectivity, particularly in rural areas, have played a key role in boosting internet adoption. Programs promoting digital literacy and smartphone access have helped more women connect to online platforms for learning, communication, healthcare information, and financial services.
Apart from digital access, the NFHS-6 survey highlighted improvements in several social and health indicators across the country. The report noted progress in institutional deliveries, child nutrition, and maternal healthcare. However, it also raised concerns about the increasing prevalence of obesity, diabetes, and other lifestyle-related health conditions among adults.
Analysts believe the growing use of the internet among women could have far-reaching economic and social benefits. Increased digital access can improve educational opportunities, support entrepreneurship, enhance financial inclusion, and empower women to participate more actively in society.
The findings underline the rapid pace of India’s digital growth and the importance of ensuring that technology remains accessible and inclusive for all sections of society.
