The Haryana government has officially extended the tenure of the Karnal Smart City Mission until March 2027, providing additional time for the completion of several ongoing urban development projects. The decision is aimed at ensuring that key infrastructure initiatives are completed without compromising quality and that residents receive the full benefits envisioned under the Smart Cities Mission.
Since its launch, Karnal Smart City Limited (KSCL) has undertaken 122 projects with a total investment of approximately ₹930 crore. Out of these, 86 projects have already been completed, while the remaining projects are currently under various stages of execution. The completed works include improvements in road infrastructure, public spaces, drainage systems, smart governance initiatives, and urban beautification efforts.
Among the major projects are the modernization of city roads, development of smart traffic management systems, installation of intelligent street lighting, enhancement of public parks, and strengthening of water supply and sewerage networks. Authorities have also focused on digital governance initiatives that enable residents to access municipal services more efficiently through online platforms.
The extension will allow the city administration to accelerate pending projects related to sustainable mobility, environmental management, urban infrastructure, and public amenities. Officials believe that the additional timeline will help ensure proper utilization of funds and timely completion of critical works that contribute to Karnal’s long-term growth.
Urban development experts view the extension positively, noting that smart city projects often require additional time due to technical complexities, land acquisition issues, and coordination among multiple agencies. Once all projects are completed, Karnal is expected to witness improved urban infrastructure, better traffic flow, enhanced civic services, and a higher quality of life for residents.
The Smart City Mission remains one of the most significant development initiatives undertaken in Karnal, shaping the city’s transformation into a more modern, efficient, and citizen-friendly urban center.
