A minor boy has been apprehended in Hoshiarpur district of Punjab in connection with an alleged case of sexual assault and blackmail involving a teenage girl, police officials said on Sunday. The case has triggered concern in the local area, with authorities launching a detailed investigation into the matter.
According to preliminary information shared by police, the matter came to light after the victim’s family lodged a complaint alleging that the accused had committed sexual assault and was also blackmailing the girl using objectionable material. Acting on the complaint, police initiated immediate action and began tracing the accused.
Officials stated that the minor boy was apprehended following swift coordination between local police teams and technical surveillance inputs. He was taken into custody for questioning, and necessary legal procedures under juvenile justice laws were initiated.
Police confirmed that a case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Given that the accused is a minor, he is being dealt with as per provisions of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, which governs the handling and rehabilitation of juveniles in conflict with law.
Investigators are currently examining digital evidence, including mobile phone data and electronic communications, to verify the allegations of blackmail. Statements of the victim and her family have been recorded as part of the ongoing investigation.
A senior police officer said that all aspects of the case are being thoroughly probed and assured that strict legal action will be taken based on evidence. “The matter is under investigation. We are ensuring a fair and sensitive approach while following all legal procedures,” the officer said.
Authorities have also emphasized the importance of protecting the identity and dignity of the victim, urging the public and media to avoid sharing any details that may lead to identification.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further action will depend on forensic findings and statements collected during the inquiry.
