A powerful explosion at a mining explosives warehouse in northeastern Myanmar has killed dozens of people and injured many others. The incident took place on May 31 in Kaung Tat village, located in Namhkam Township of Shan State near the Chinese border.
Local authorities and rescue teams continue search and recovery operations. The disaster is being described as one of Myanmar’s deadliest industrial accidents in recent years.
Death Toll Rises After Massive Blast
Officials have confirmed at least 43 deaths, including several children. More than 100 people suffered injuries, and many remain in critical condition. Authorities fear the death toll could increase as rescue workers search through the rubble.
Emergency teams have been helping survivors and transporting the injured to nearby medical facilities.
Widespread Destruction Reported
Witnesses said they heard a loud explosion around midday. A huge cloud of smoke quickly rose into the sky, and the blast shook nearby communities.
The explosion destroyed homes, damaged buildings, and left a large crater at the site. Reports indicate that more than 200 houses suffered damage. Many residents lost their homes and personal belongings within seconds.
Investigation Underway
Initial reports suggest that the explosion originated from a warehouse storing materials used in mining and quarrying activities. However, investigators have not yet determined the exact cause.
Officials from the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), which controls the area, have launched an investigation. They have promised to identify any safety failures and hold those responsible accountable.
Concerns Over Mining Safety
The tragedy has renewed concerns about safety standards in Myanmar’s mining industry. Many mining operations are located in remote areas where oversight remains limited.
Experts say stricter regulations and safer storage practices are needed to prevent similar disasters. Humanitarian organizations have also called for support for affected families and long-term rebuilding efforts.
