Nayagaon: Residents have raised questions over electricity safety in Nayagaon after an eight-year-old girl died following an electrocution incident in Baba Balak Nath Colony on Saturday morning. The police have registered a case of unnatural death and started proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).
Officials of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) later removed illegal connections from a transformer in the colony. The action came after residents alleged that unauthorised direct-hookup connections had contributed to the presence of low-hanging electricity wires in the area.
Nayagaon Electrocution Death Raises Safety Concerns
The child, identified as Mansi, was the eldest of four children of construction labourer Ravinder. She reportedly came into contact with low-hanging electricity wires at around 9 am on Saturday.
Mansi died at the spot. Three other children who were with her reportedly escaped the incident.
Residents have alleged that loose and low-hanging electricity wires remain a serious safety concern in several parts of Nayagaon. They have questioned whether regular inspections could have prevented the incident.
The Nayagaon electrocution death has also triggered demands for greater accountability and better monitoring of local electricity infrastructure.
Illegal Connections Removed After Incident
Following the incident, PSPCL officials removed illegal connections from a transformer in Baba Balak Nath Colony.
Residents alleged that some households had taken direct connections from the transformer. They claimed that these unauthorised connections had contributed to unsafe wiring conditions in the area.
The allegations have not been established independently. The police proceedings and any subsequent inquiry will determine responsibility for the incident.
Nayagaon councillor Makhan Singh criticised the power utility and called for accountability. He also claimed that electricity wires hang loosely in several streets in the area.
Residents Demand Accountability
Residents have expressed anger over what they describe as inadequate attention to electrical safety.
Advocate Ravneet Singh also alleged that there was a lack of accountability among PSPCL officials in the area. He further made allegations of corruption against officials.
Such allegations should be treated as claims unless established through an official investigation.
The incident has renewed concerns about electrical safety in densely populated colonies. Residents want authorities to inspect transformers, wiring and electricity connections in vulnerable areas.
