Financial assistance under Centre’s employment-linked initiative aims to support new entrants into the formal workforce

A total of 5,435 first-time employees in Chandigarh are set to receive financial benefits amounting to ₹3.26 crore under a Central Government employment-linked incentive scheme, marking a significant step toward encouraging formal employment and supporting young workers entering the organised workforce.

The initiative is designed to promote workforce formalisation by providing financial assistance to eligible individuals who have recently secured their first formal jobs. Beneficiaries are identified based on prescribed eligibility criteria under the scheme, which generally focuses on newly employed workers enrolled in recognised social security and employment databases.

According to official information, the ₹3.26 crore assistance will be disbursed directly to the bank accounts of 5,435 eligible beneficiaries through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) mechanism. The scheme aims to ease the financial burden on new entrants to the labour market while incentivising participation in the formal economy.

Government officials have described the programme as part of broader efforts to strengthen employment generation and expand social security coverage. Labour and employment authorities have stated that encouraging first-time workers to enter the organised sector can contribute to greater job stability, improved access to benefits, and enhanced economic participation.

The scheme forms part of wider national initiatives aimed at increasing formal employment and supporting workforce development. Across India, employment-linked programmes have been introduced alongside skill development, apprenticeship, and social security initiatives to improve labour market outcomes and encourage job creation.

Economists and labour market experts note that financial incentives for first-time employees can help reduce barriers to workforce participation, particularly among young job seekers. Industry representatives have also argued that formalisation benefits both workers and employers by improving compliance and strengthening workforce records.

Beneficiaries are expected to use the financial assistance to meet early career expenses, including commuting, relocation, professional training, or other employment-related needs. While individual reactions were not immediately available, officials say the initiative is intended to provide support during a crucial stage of professional development.

Chandigarh has witnessed growing participation in formal employment sectors, particularly in services, education, healthcare, information technology, and administration. The latest disbursement reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen formal employment opportunities and support new workforce entrants, though the long-term success of such schemes will ultimately depend on sustained employment growth, job quality, and continued participation.
