Kurukshetra University has proposed a Centre for Folk Literature and Cultural Research to preserve and promote Haryana’s rich folk culture and heritage.
Centre to promote Haryana’s folk culture
Kurukshetra University plans to establish the centre under its Department of Hindi.
Vice-Chancellor Prof Som Nath Sachdeva said the university wants to preserve Haryana’s cultural heritage. The centre will support research on folk literature and culture.
The centre will organise seminars, workshops and exhibitions. It will also support research projects at national and international levels.
The university plans to document and digitise Haryana’s folk literature. It will also encourage its publication and wider use.
Focus on folk literature and research
The centre will promote research on mother tongues and folk languages. It will also study local cultural traditions.
The initiative aligns with the National Education Policy 2020. The university expects the centre to strengthen research on regional languages and cultural heritage.
Prof Maha Singh Poonia, Chairperson of the Department of Hindi, said the university’s Dharohar Haryana Museum has valuable cultural material.
The museum houses resources on Haryana’s folk life and folk art. It also contains material on traditional attire, handicrafts and traditional practices.
Existing resources to move to the centre
The university has also proposed shifting books and reference material to the new centre.
The Department of Hindi currently holds these resources. Researchers will gain easier access once the material moves to the centre.
The move will help researchers use the university’s collection more effectively. It will also support future studies on Haryana’s folk traditions.
Committee to oversee the centre
The university has proposed a committee to oversee the centre and guide its research activities.
The Chairperson of the Hindi Department will serve as the Convener. The committee will also include officials from Public Relations, Youth and Cultural Affairs, the JLN Library and the university administration.
A representative of the Finance Officer will also join the committee.

The proposed centre will give researchers a dedicated platform to study Haryana’s folk literature and culture.
It will also help preserve traditional knowledge for future generations. Through research, documentation and digitisation, Kurukshetra University aims to give Haryana’s cultural heritage a wider academic reach.
