Abhay Chautala protest remarks

A political controversy has erupted in Haryana after the state government’s decision to restrict rallies, demonstrations, roadshows and large public gatherings until September 2026. The order, issued as part of a broader set of austerity measures aimed at conserving fuel and reducing public expenditure, has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties.

Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) president Abhay Singh Chautala strongly opposed the move, describing it as “undemocratic” and “dictatorial.” Addressing a press conference in Chandigarh, Chautala alleged that the government was attempting to suppress the democratic right to protest by imposing unilateral restrictions without consulting the public. He said that in a democracy, people must have the freedom to express their concerns through peaceful demonstrations.

Chautala also accused the ruling BJP government of adopting a double standard, claiming that while opposition parties and public groups were being discouraged from organising protests, BJP leaders continued to hold political programmes and tours. He questioned why the restrictions should apply only to critics of the government.

The INLD leader demanded the immediate withdrawal of the order and warned that his party would continue its scheduled political activities. He announced that the party would organise a massive rally on September 25 to mark the birth anniversary of former Deputy Prime Minister Devi Lal, challenging the administration to stop the event.

The Haryana government has maintained that the measures are temporary and intended to address concerns related to fuel conservation and fiscal discipline amid global economic uncertainties. However, the opposition argues that the restrictions amount to an attack on citizens’ constitutional rights and democratic values.
