In a significant step towards implementing the National Education Policy (NEP), the Chandigarh Education Department has introduced skill-based and vocational courses in all 42 government senior secondary schools across the city. The initiative offers students nearly 30 elective subjects designed to enhance employability, practical learning, and career readiness in an evolving job market.
According to education officials, the newly introduced courses cover a wide range of emerging and industry-oriented fields, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Information Technology (IT), Healthcare, Hospitality, Retail, Financial Services, Tourism, Media, and other vocational disciplines. The program aims to provide students with greater flexibility in choosing career pathways while integrating practical skills with academic education.
Officials stated that the courses have been aligned with the NEP’s emphasis on multidisciplinary learning, vocational education, digital literacy, and experiential training. Students enrolled in traditional streams such as Science, Commerce, and Humanities will also have the opportunity to select vocational electives, enabling them to combine academic studies with industry-relevant skills.
The curriculum is expected to include classroom instruction, practical training, project-based learning, and exposure to real-world work environments. Authorities are also working on strengthening school infrastructure through upgraded laboratories, digital learning resources, specialized equipment, and vocational training facilities. Industry collaborations and certification opportunities may further support students in developing job-ready competencies.
School principals and education administrators welcomed the initiative, describing it as an important step toward bridging the gap between classroom education and workforce requirements. Career counselors noted that emerging sectors such as AI, healthcare, and technology are expected to generate significant employment opportunities in the coming years.
Students and parents have also responded positively, viewing the courses as a valuable addition to traditional education. Education experts believe skill-based learning can improve career prospects, encourage entrepreneurship, and better prepare students for higher education and professional opportunities.
The initiative reflects Chandigarh’s commitment to modernizing school education and equipping young learners with the knowledge and practical skills required in a rapidly changing economy.
