Former Punjab Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Inderjit Singh Sidhu, widely known as Chandigarh’s “Broom Warrior,” is set to receive the prestigious Padma Shri on June 23 in recognition of his decades-long contribution to cleanliness, civic responsibility, and community service.
Sidhu, 88, retired from the Punjab Police in 1996 after a distinguished career in law enforcement. Rather than stepping away from public service, he devoted his post-retirement years to promoting cleanliness and environmental awareness across Chandigarh. His consistent efforts to keep public spaces clean earned him widespread respect and the affectionate title of “Broom Warrior.”
For years, Sidhu has been seen participating in cleanliness drives, collecting litter from roadsides, parks, and public areas, while encouraging citizens to take responsibility for maintaining their surroundings. His work has inspired students, volunteers, resident welfare associations, and social organizations to join campaigns aimed at improving urban cleanliness.
Government officials and civic authorities have praised Sidhu’s commitment to public welfare. Community leaders and environmental activists described the Padma Shri recognition as a fitting tribute to a citizen who transformed a personal mission into a citywide movement. Residents of Chandigarh said his efforts have demonstrated how individual action can create meaningful social change.
The Padma Shri is among India’s highest civilian honours and is awarded to individuals for distinguished service in various fields. Sidhu’s selection reflects national recognition of grassroots civic engagement and environmental stewardship.
The award is scheduled to be conferred at a ceremony on June 23, where recipients from across the country will be honoured for their contributions to society. The recognition places Sidhu among a select group of individuals whose work has had a lasting public impact.
Urban planners and environmental experts say Sidhu’s journey highlights the importance of citizen participation in maintaining sustainable and clean cities. His story continues to serve as an example of how dedication, discipline, and community spirit can contribute to positive social transformation.
