Shimla: Himachal Pradesh is increasingly focusing on long-stay and sustainable tourism as part of a broader strategy to reduce pressure on overcrowded hill stations and enhance the overall visitor experience, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu said.
The state government is encouraging tourists to move beyond short weekend trips and instead explore multiple destinations across Himachal Pradesh. This shift aims to promote deeper travel experiences while strengthening local economies and supporting small businesses.
Shift Toward Sustainable and Balanced Tourism
The Chief Minister highlighted that Himachal Pradesh is working to position itself as a year-round tourism destination. The initiative focuses on reducing congestion in popular hotspots such as Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala by promoting lesser-known and offbeat destinations across the state.
This redistribution of tourist flow is expected to create a more balanced and sustainable tourism model.
Promotion of Homestays and Rural Tourism
As part of this strategy, the state is expanding its homestay network, eco-tourism projects, and rural tourism initiatives. These efforts are designed to offer visitors more authentic cultural experiences while directly benefiting rural communities through increased income opportunities.
Infrastructure and Connectivity Development
To support long-stay tourism, the government is also improving tourism infrastructure, including road connectivity, accommodation facilities, and traveler amenities. These upgrades aim to make extended stays more comfortable, convenient, and accessible for domestic and international tourists.
Economic Growth with Environmental Focus
Officials believe that encouraging longer stays will significantly increase tourist spending in local markets, hospitality, transport, and allied sectors. At the same time, the policy emphasizes responsible tourism practices to protect Himachal Pradesh’s fragile Himalayan ecosystem.
Himachal’s Vision for Sustainable Tourism
The Chief Minister reiterated that Himachal Pradesh aims to become a model state for sustainable tourism by balancing economic development with environmental conservation. The long-stay tourism model is expected to play a key role in achieving this vision.
